Upcoming Year-Long Course

The Blackwell Companion to Hinduism
August 19 2024

Our Academic Director, Prof Gavin Flood has now compiled two editions of the Blackwell Companion to Hinduism – a collection of essays by the world’s pre-eminent scholars of Hinduism. It covers all the big areas of a very big topic:

  • Text and tradition;
  • Regional variations;
  • History;
  • Indian sciences;
  • Philosophy and theology; and
  • Society, politics, and nation.

Our job at the OCHS Continuing Education Department is to make complex texts accessible and we’re doing that by creating a course around this book.

Our thinking is that a book like this works best with guidance. So (where possible) we have the authors present a recorded lecture on their essay – clarification, explanation, maybe even a rebuttal! And to this we will add Prof. Flood serving as tutor.

We envision this as a year-long course broken into 3-4 terms, each with an assignment at the end. An electronic copy of the book will also be made available.

This is quite an undertaking, and we are working in earnest with about half the lectures recorded and an aim to release in 2025.
