Since the beginning of the OCHS continuing education adventure, Dr Nick Sutton has been at the heart of everything we do. In the early years, he was the tutor and course producer.

In recent years he has been busy with his life’s work – a translation and commentary of the Mokṣa-dharma-parvan section of the Mahābhārata.

We have just published of the first two volumes (of four) of this work.

The Mahābhārata has long been a focus of Nick’s work and dharma has been a topic he’s written, taught, and lectured on for decades. This book is the fruit of those decades.

Themes

The great battle at Kurukṣetra is over and the survivors gather around the fallen Bhīṣma to draw upon his wisdom. They ask him about kingship and governance, spiritual philosophy, and the practices that lead to liberation.

This discussion forms the Mokṣa-dharma-parvan – part of Book 12 (the Śānti-parvan) of the Mahābhārata.

The subjects discussed are wide ranging but the principal focus is on renunciation of the world, the philosophy of Sāṁkhya, early Vaiṣṇava theism, and probably the earliest teachings we have on the techniques of meditational yoga.

We’d like to offer our special thanks to the Srivastava Family trust and to GoDharmic for their sponsorship of the editing and publishing of this vital work.
