Svādhyāya (self-study) is a form of introspection and one of the observances (niyamas) in Patañjali’s eight-limbed aṣṭāṅga yoga, as well as an essential part of his kriyā yoga, the yoga of action. Traditionally this can take the form of japa, or the repetition of mantras. “Mantra” literally means an instrument of the mind. Through chanting and discussion, we will explore mantras from the Upaniṣads and other texts as tools for self-knowledge.
